Eckart Hübner

Dekan Fakultät Musik

After studying with Klaus Thunemann (bassoon) and Volker Rohde (conducting), Eckart Hübner initially held solo positions in leading German orchestras (from 1990 in the SWR Symphony Orchestra).

At the same time, he was active as a soloist and chamber musician, the latter primarily with the Albert Schweitzer Quintet, which is a prize winner of the German Music Competition and the ARD Competition, and was awarded the German Record Critics’ Award for its complete recording of Anton Reicha’s wind quintets.

Eckart Hübner’s numerous solo recordings—most recently bassoon concertos by Anton Rosetti and Mozart as both soloist and conductor—have led to him being described today as “one of the most renowned bassoonists in Europe” (Klassik Heute).

Also, he was active as a soloist and chamber musician, the latter primarily with the Albert Schweitzer Quintet, which is a prize winner of the German Music Competition and the ARD Competition, among others, and was awarded the German Record Critics’ Award for its complete recording of Anton Reicha’s wind quintets. Since the mid-1990s, teaching has increasingly occupied a significant part of Eckart Hübner’s activities. He initially led the bassoon class at the Basel Music Academy. Since 1997, he has been Professor of Bassoon and Ensemble Work at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Since then, he has also devoted himself more and more to conducting. He has led projects in the university and youth orchestra sector (including the European Community Youth Orchestra) and has collaborated with various orchestras (including the Schwerin State Orchestra, the German Chamber Academy Neuss, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Kurpfalz Chamber Orchestra Mannheim, and the Jena Symphony Orchestra).

Abroad, he has conducted regularly in various cities in Romania (including the Romanian Radio Chamber Orchestra in Bucharest) and, since last year, also with various orchestras in China.

Since 2020, Hübner has been Dean of the Faculty of Music at the UdK Berlin.
