
Yunsung Chang
Head of Conducting Department, Korean National University
He graduated from Seoul National University with a major in composition and completed graduate studies in orchestral conducting at the same institution. He continued his formal training at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, earning the Diplom in orchestral conducting, and later pursued professional studies at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. He is a laureate of the Prokofiev International Conducting Competition in St. Petersburg and the Tokyo International Conducting Competition, where he received Second Prize with no First Prize awarded.
Chang has appeared with numerous internationally renowned orchestras, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Symphony, Camerata St. Petersburg, Tokyo Symphony, Osaka Philharmonic, Sendai Philharmonic, Vienna Concertverein, Klagenfurt Symphony, Robert Schumann Philharmonic Chemnitz, Nuremberg Symphony, Roma Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Clásica Santa Cecilia in Madrid, Hungarian MAV Symphony Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony, Prague Symphony, Brno Symphony, Janáček Philharmonic, Kraków Radio Symphony, Kharkiv Philharmonic, and the Belgrade Symphony, among many others.
His international touring engagements include a four-city tour of Germany with the Nuremberg Symphony, a Japan tour with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, a Korea tour with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Camerata St. Petersburg, Austria and St. Pölten tours with the Brno Philharmonic and the Janáček Philharmonic, and ballet productions with Universal Ballet at Sadler’s Wells in London, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. He has also led opera tours in Tokyo and Osaka with the Seoul Metropolitan Opera.
In 1995, Chang conducted the European premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Symphony No. 5, Korea, in Kraków and has since given numerous premieres including Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, Casella’s Symphony No. 2, Bloch’s Symphony in C-sharp minor, and many works by contemporary Korean composers. His repertoire spans an extensive range from the classical tradition to modern and contemporary works.
An active opera conductor, Chang made his debut at Neustudio Bühne in Austria with Mozart’s Die Gans von Kairo. His stage repertoire includes Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte, Rossini’s La cambiale di matrimonio and Il barbiere di Siviglia, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Verdi’s Rigoletto, La traviata, La forza del destino, and Nabucco, Puccini’s Il trittico, Madama Butterfly, La bohème, and Tosca, Bizet’s Carmen, Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher.
He has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director of the Ulsan, Changwon, and Daejeon Symphony Orchestras, and the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Resident Conductor of the Gunpo Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, and Principal Conductor of the Osaka College Opera House in Japan. His recordings have been released on the Camerata Japan label.
Chang is currently Professor of Conducting at Seoul National University and Artistic Director of the Soli Deo Gloria Music Association in Seoul and Vienna.
